Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity medicine physician at Harvard Medical School, has heard similar reports from her patients. “Anecdotally, I have had patients report that their sense of smell feels stronger or that certain scents are more noticeable after starting GLP-1 medications,” she said. Most commonly, they describe heightened sensitivity to food smells, but a smaller number notice non-food scents like perfumes.

Large controlled studies are still lacking, but Parma’s team analyzed the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and found reports of parosmia, a smell distortion disorder, in some GLP-1 users. “Parosmia can render food smells unpleasant while leaving non-food fragrances intact, or in rarer cases, make smells more positive,” she said. This could shift preferences from the kitchen to the perfume counter.

However, the phenomenon also underscores the need for rigorous data collection. As Parma noted, “More research is needed before scientists can draw firm conclusions.” For now, the anecdotal evidence is compelling enough for investors and policymakers to watch closely.
