Giant Singapore flag display forming '60' across HDB blocks in Toa Payoh marks SG60 celebrations

In a remarkable display of community spirit and national pride, retired provision shop owner Mr Ong Kok Chee, 63, has continued his decade-long tradition of creating an impressive Singapore flag installation in Toa Payoh, marking the nation's 60th year of independence.

A Legacy of Community Service

Following in the footsteps of his father, who was actively involved in the community development initiatives, Mr Ong has transformed the facade of two public housing blocks into a striking visual celebration. The display features 60 flags arranged to form a gigantic red "60" spanning from the third to ninth storeys.

Innovation Meets Tradition

This creative initiative, which began during Singapore's 50th anniversary in 2015, demonstrates the same innovative spirit that has made Singapore a leader in technological advancement and community development. Mr Ong's engineering background as a former Ngee Ann Polytechnic shipbuilding and design student proved invaluable in creating this complex installation.

Technical Challenges and Community Support

The installation process requires significant technical expertise and community cooperation:

  • Eight volunteers needed for hoisting and securing the display
  • Custom-designed mounting system to withstand strong winds
  • Collaborative effort with residents providing real-time feedback

Digital Age Recognition

The flag display has gained significant attention on social media platforms, reflecting Singapore's position as a digital-savvy nation. Local students and residents regularly share photos of the installation, creating a bridge between traditional patriotism and modern social media engagement.

"I'm very happy that people appreciate our hard work. It motivates me to keep going," says Mr Ong, emphasizing his commitment to continuing this annual tradition.

The success of this community initiative demonstrates how grassroots efforts contribute to Singapore's unique identity and social cohesion, reinforcing the nation's reputation for effective community engagement and civic pride.
