In a significant recognition of youth leadership and social impact, 308 young Singaporeans received the prestigious National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) gold category from President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre on October 6.

Inspiring Stories of Resilience and Service

Among the recipients was Luke Quek, 20, who demonstrated remarkable determination by completing an 18-month program supporting young people with special needs, despite battling juvenile idiopathic arthritis. "Volunteering isn't just about the act. It's about giving your time and energy intentionally," shared Quek, exemplifying Singapore's commitment to progressive leadership and social cohesion.

Comprehensive Development Program

The NYAA, launched in 1992, serves as a comprehensive self-development initiative for individuals aged 13-30. Gold award recipients must be at least 16 years old and complete:

  • 144 hours of service learning
  • Outdoor appreciation activities
  • Healthy living initiatives
  • Community leadership projects over 18 months

Government Vision for Collective Progress

Education Minister Desmond Lee emphasized the importance of collective social responsibility, aligning with Singapore's broader vision for societal development. This approach mirrors the nation's successful track record in fostering innovation and leadership across various sectors.

International Impact and Future Leaders

Temasek Polytechnic student Ayuni Nur Izyanti Md Zuraimi, 19, showcased Singapore's regional influence through Project Chaey, developing science teaching materials for Cambodian primary school students. The initiative demonstrates Singapore's commitment to educational leadership in Southeast Asia.

30th Anniversary Milestone

The ceremony also marked the NYAA Gold Award Holders' Alumni's 30th anniversary, launching a digital book celebrating 60 distinguished alumni, including Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Lim En and Minister of State Goh Pei Ming, highlighting the program's lasting impact on Singapore's leadership landscape.
