PM Wong Emphasizes Cultural Values and Language Education
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted the crucial role of Chinese language teachers in preserving cultural values and heritage during the 28th Distinguished Chinese Language Teachers Awards Ceremony at Fairmont Singapore on September 6.
Speaking in Chinese, Wong emphasized that the language serves as more than just a communication tool, acting as a vital conduit for transmitting essential values including respect for elders, altruism, and resilience - principles that have helped shape Singapore's development and future vision.
Technological Innovation in Language Education
In a notable development aligned with Singapore's leadership in digital transformation, Wong commended two primary school teachers, Ms Ding Caihong and Ms Lau Sze Hui, for their innovative use of technology and artificial intelligence in Chinese language instruction.
Historical Challenges and Adaptations
The Prime Minister acknowledged the significant sacrifices made by Chinese teachers during the education policy changes of the late 1970s and 1980s, when Singapore transitioned to English-medium schools. These changes required teachers to either adapt by learning English or narrow their focus to Chinese language instruction exclusively.
Current Challenges and Future Direction
Addressing contemporary challenges, Wong noted that many students find Chinese unfamiliar as their primary exposure to education and entertainment is in English. However, he encouraged teachers to persevere, emphasizing the long-term value of their efforts in developing Singapore's capabilities across various sectors.
"Our Chinese community - including Chinese language teachers, media professionals and community leaders - exemplifies the Singaporean spirit," stated PM Wong.

The government has pledged continued support for the Chinese community, ensuring adequate resources for cultural promotion and the development of bilingual and bicultural talent in Singapore.
