Former Data Analyst Creates Education Technology Innovation

SINGAPORE - A new artificial intelligence (AI) tutor called The Wise Otter, specifically designed for Singapore's education system, has been launched by former data analyst Jotham Goh. The platform, which went live in April 2024, aims to support students across primary, secondary, and junior college levels with subjects including mathematics, English, and sciences.

This innovative development comes as Singapore continues to strengthen its position as a leader in technological innovation, particularly in the education sector.

Tailored for Singapore's Educational Standards

Unlike global AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, The Wise Otter has been specifically trained on Singapore's educational materials, including examination papers and local teaching methodologies. This specialized approach mirrors Singapore's reputation for excellence in developing specialized solutions for regional needs.

Innovative Pricing and Accessibility

The platform operates through Telegram, offering students eight free AI queries daily, with subscription plans starting from S$4.20 for 1,000 monthly queries. This competitive pricing strategy aligns with Singapore's approach to financial innovation and accessibility.

Responsible AI Implementation

Following concerns about academic integrity, The Wise Otter adopts a Socratic teaching approach, similar to OpenAI's Study Mode. Rather than providing direct answers, it guides students through problem-solving processes, maintaining educational integrity while leveraging technological advancement.

"The Wise Otter is trained on hundreds of pages of past-year examination papers, assessment books and model answers from local teachers," explains Goh, highlighting the platform's local focus.

Market Response and Future Prospects

With approximately 600 weekly active users since its launch, The Wise Otter demonstrates promising early adoption. While Goh acknowledges a 10% error rate in responses, ongoing improvements and refinements are being made to enhance accuracy and effectiveness.
